The instrument's shape was inspired by the
Weissenborns of the 1920's. The similarity ends there however,
as the internal bracing pattern has been modified to take advantage
of the large resonating cavity, and several additional design
features have been altered/added such as the offset soundhole(s)
and "trap door".
The Maalaea is available with a single or double offset soundhole
which allows for modification of the top bracing, resulting in
increased volume and a more balanced tone. Traditionally placed
soundholes available at clients request. A "trap door"
(insert) at the butt of the instrument allows for easy access
to the interior and serves as a platform for the mounting of
electronics if desired.
The model is available in a variety of styles. The featured instrument
is a Artist Series, with optional dual soundholes, trap door,
and koa peghead underlay.
